Santa Cruz de Artazu, D.O. Navarra

The Artazu project in Navarra was created by Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle of Rioja's famous Artadi estate in 1996, basing itself in the village of Artazu. The goal was to take the same quest for varietal purity that Artadi seeks in Tempranillo to the Garnacha varietal.

The D.O. of Navarra was selected as similar to Rioja in the sense that it is affected by both Atlantic and Mediterranean influences and for the quality of its old vine Garnacha material. The Garnacha vineyards, that the Santa Cruz de Artazu and Artazu wines are based on, are planted in brown-limestone and clay-calcareous soils and grow in a climate that is hard and full of contrasts: hot and dry in summer; cold and humid in winter.

Polished red apples with a savoury cold black tea edge … it’s unmistakably the Spanish Garnacha. Unwooded, unbudgeingly savoury, driven by high levels of very high quality fruit tannin, it’s the polar opposite of raspberry cordial Grenaches. Simple, only just mid-weight, and very lovely.

A deeper more concentrated version of the Artazuri, with a terrifically composed cluster of spicy oak, fruit tannin and acid. An almost thrusting finish and red cherry fruit on the palate. Good concentration, length and balance. A single vineyard wine, produced from 100+ year old vines.
