Luis Pato, Vinho Regional Beiras

Luís Pato wine is the result of the association of two traditional families from Bairrada, the Pato family and the Melo Campos family. At the Quinta do Ribeirinho (Ribeirinho Estate, 72 ha) the documents reveal that wine has been in production since the 18th century. Vine husbandry and winemaking are the preserve of the eponymous Senor Luis Pato. Pato became the first producer-bottler after the demarcation of D.O. Bairrada in the 1970s.

Spearmint and brush, then gamey red berry, a touch of forest floor and hint of raw tobacco, just what you'd expect from Baga with a big whack (40%) of Touriga Nacional. Fruit is sour cherry/damson plum, soft, open and slightly earthy-gamey, with a little Indian ink spiciness and a hint of nicely astringent tannin. Man, it looks seriously Pomerol-like in its chalky-gravelly after-effect. Aged only in stainless and concrete, closed with screwcap.

'Pan' and 'Barrosa' are two different soil-based single vineyard expressions of Baga-the former relatively feminine, the latter more Bordeaux-masculine. Both age wonderfully ... 'Pan' is from youthful 20 y.o. sand-planted vines, and has concentration to match 'Barrosa', with extra zip.
