Mature red-black berries with woodsmoke and an unmistakeable sense of Rioja placeness. Juicy, very slightly meaty, a touch of herb and earth, and perfect articulation of fruit-fruit tannin-fruit acid. Great harmony and pretty decent length for a wine of this price. No more than mid-weight, medium-everything, open, elegant and fine.

Neither jubey nor dry, this mid-weight premium drinks well now and has a decent future. Dark, purply and spicy fruit spectrum is given wonderful style and mouthfeel by great fruit tannin and beautifully integrated acid and subtle French oak. Everything is very nicely framed with a fine fruit-savoury interplay and balance.

Pagos Viejos are old vineyards, in this case one of 50 and another of 80 years. Lovely wine, leads with liquorous red cherry glamoured up with a sweep of Riojan dried herb aromatics. Great volume, spicy fruit and ripe natural tannins/acid riding on very fine oak. Fermented and aged 18 months in new French oak.

The wines from this 35 y.o. vineyard have freshness and are elegantly structured. Red fruits, beet, radish, candied pomegranate, gentle dark spice and clay soil perfume, really lovely florals - peony, old rose. Good roundness and volume in the mouth, the spicy red berry palate pulls through with very good mouthfeel.

West-facing situated to the afternoon sun, this 55 y.o. planting yields rich and dark fruits - morello cherry and cherry ripe chocolate. Sturdy, savoury with dark florals, and a solid linear palate with lots of soil influence and a great spice/acid through line.

In the Rio Seco, it’s south-east facing, with deep limestone and clay soils. 'El Carretil' is 5.5 ha, and plantings range in age between 50-80 years. The nose is savoury, subtle, mature and pure. Dark and foresty woodspice aromatics with tuber-rose, gentian violet, and sweet spices. The palate has an awesome harmony, lands mid-palate and radiates in all directions, with very good fruit/tannin interplay and acid nipping all the edges. Profound.

Fine purply fruits, blue florals and those Rioja dried herbs, and gorgeous sweet-sour-spicy pippy berries. To say that it has the manner, perfume and texture of Grand Cru Burgundy says very good things about Burgundy?!
