Palacios Remondo, D.O Rioja (Rioja Baja)

This is the family estate of Alvaro Palacios (see also his Bierzo wines and his Priorat wines). Along with Telmo and Peter Sisseck (Pingus), Alvaro is one of the rock stars of modern Spanish wine making. Like the others, he's no super-charged sugar-and-oak freak, though. It's all about the vineyard - great old-vines, beautifully composed fruit reflecting the smells and flavours of the earth in the finished wine.

Alvaro’s precise-yet-barely-tutored wines always speak gently but unfailingly of the earth in which they grow: red-black fruits in red dirt bespeak this, the jewel vineyard of Rioja Baja. Awesome, softly gloving fruit tannin is the heart from which ever-so-pleasant fruit radiates a warm glow. Gentle, earthily-fruited, classy, delicious.

Red-black fruits, earthy and savoury with a hint of tobacco from the Tempranillo in the blend. It’s a gently gurgling brook in the mouth, nimble and running, mineral, elegant. Structurally, it’s close to impossible to tell where earth, oak, tannin, acid and minerals each begin and end … they meld to affect a disarmingly simple ‘mouthfeel’ within the fruit, which could in fact be the ideal, eh? 60% Garnacha 30% Tempranillo.

Quite pruney Garnacha sets this off in a savoury red berry direction, followed by blueberryish Tempranillo with touches of plum, tobacco and sage. Earthiness and pretty, well defined red berries show the Garnacha base on the palate, with terrific natural fruit acidity and light tannins, and a little cola-violet perfume release at back from the Temp. Gentle, open, dry and subtle, this is delicious and characterful premium Rioja Baja.
