Quinta Sardonia, Tierras de Castilla y León

The brainchild of Peter Sisseck, of Dominio de Pingus fame, Qunita Sardonia is a relatively new project which we have been following since its inception. Biodynamic and organically grown, it is a high altitude ridge-and-valley site which Peter has planted and nurtured from scratch.

Situated about 8 kms west of the Pingus winery, QS is located just outside the western border of Ribera del Duero, at around 850m altitude above the town of Sardon del Duero. Thus, the wines are labeled Vino de la Tierras de Castille y León, effectively a ‘country wine’ appellation. The Quinta Sardonia estate is 17 hectares and features three solid profiles, gypsum, loam and limestone and was planted in 1998.

Blueberry with a zingy, crunchy ginger jube lift, and a bit of deeper, darker cola, licorice, briary bramble and cowhide. Artefact-free, it’s elegant, savoury and composed, with a bright fresh palate and great energy. Silky fruit and a juicy moreish finish. Aged 13 months in French barriques (20% new 50% 1 y.o., 15% 2 y.o.), save for 15% aged in concrete eggs. 2008 saw a long late ripening after a very cold wet winter and cool September, and is considered an ‘Atlantic’ harvest, with the last fruit gathered on November 10!

Lush, deep, carnal and mineral all at once, there’s woodsmoke and roasted meats (think bear roasted on peach wood), allspice and all manner of husky leathery spices, dark florals - licorice, tobacco and bluebells, mild chocolate and old flowers in earth. The palate is deep and relaxed - a dark cave full of mildly chocolately plum and black cherry fruits floating down a liquid mineral-anise river chocked full of great spice to a long oak/acid finish. Aromatically interesting, calm and composed (no shouting!), and the palate has a similarly elegant self-sufficiency, it’s a mile long, blue-noted and really, really classy. Xanadu indeed, my pleasure dome erect! 16 months in 45% new/55% 1 y.o. French barrique.
