Rueda is a special region, renowned for whites – reds and pinks are made but are de-classified as Tierras de Castille y Leon; DO Rueda is reserved for whites alone. These are based on the local variety, Verdejo. For years, Telmo has been talking about wanting to push further with Rueda; experiments ensued, and from 2008 a new wine, sort of a ‘Super Rueda’, was born – El Transistor.
2009 Telmo Rodriguez 'El Transistor' Verdejo, D.O. Rueda , $60 rrp
The 2009 is luscious, voluminous, spicy, textural, with beautiful earthiness. Really perfumed, golden and generous in the mouth, but cut by fabulous tart fruit-skin extract. The nose is almond meal and husk, vanilla and orange oil; the palate of custard apple and baked quince is full, suave, superfine and goes on and on. It may be an expensive-seeming Rueda at this price; but it’s very good value for a textural dream of a wine of this quality.
